Voters in Marshfield's School District Will Decide the Fate of a $12 Million Referendum

Mike Warrens, (WDLB) -Voters in the Marshfield School District will be deciding the fate of a 12-million dollar budget override referendum this fall. The Marshfield Board of Education voted last night in favor of asking district residents to vote "yes" or "no" on exceeding state revenue limits by three-million dollars for four years. If the referendum fails, the board has identified a list of cuts totaling three-point-one-million dollars. That list includes one-point-two million dollars in cuts to the instructional staff budget, including the elimination of a social worker position for 87-thousand dollars. The proposed cut list also includes reductions to the administrative, support, and custodial staffs as well.
Without the referendum dollars, the district is looking at a budget deficit of three-point-six million dollars. That's because an existing 10-million dollar override referendum expires next year. If the referendum passes, the owner of a 100-thousand dollar home would pay roughly 25-dollars more per year in taxes.
