Marshfield Voters Will Decide the Fate of a Street Referendum Next Week

(Mike Warren, WDLB) -Marshfield voters will be asked next week to decide the fate of a street referendum totaling nearly seven-million dollars.Alderman Gordy Earll says voters will be asked to vote “yes” or “no” on whether the city should impose an additional tax of one-dollar per one-thousand dollars of assessed value for five years to address some of the city’s major street repair projects. Alderman Ed Wagner says the city borrows roughly two-and-a-half million dollars per year for street reconstruction and repair, while paying off roughly three million dollars in debt each year??"allowing the city to fix roads without raising taxes.
But because the city has some big-ticket projects it wants to do, the Common Council was looking for a way to generate additional funds to avoiding falling further behind on its routine street repairs. The city has identified nine street re-construction projects totaling five-million dollars that would be done if the referendum passes, plus one-point-eight million dollars worth of asphalt overlay projects.
