Clark County Health Department's "Get Yourself Tested" Campaign, Final
Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016 -- 8:24 AM
-The Clark County Health Department is encouraging county residents to get tested for STI’s.I spoke with Kelsey Lynn, a nurse at Clark County’s Reproductive Health Clinic, and Melissa Kono, the county’s CNRED agent, about an initiative they’re running known as they “Get Yourself Tested” Initiative. To end our interview, Melissa talked about the startling number of people infected and why they need to get tested.
"I do think it's worth repeating that it's startling that 50% of our population 18-24 has Chlamydia and most likely doesn't know it. And then coupled with the stigma of not knowing and then not wanting to get tested because of the embarrassment doesn't really do any good with getting rid of this infection. Because people just go along and reinfect and infect others, so we have to get a handle on this. I mean, this is out of control. If anything else was infecting our young population at this rate, we would be all over it. For some reason, I don't know if it's a stigma because it's a sexually transmitted infection or maybe it's not seen as threatening. There's few if any symptoms. It can be easily treated. I just don't know why we're not going after it the way we go after other things. Especially, there's so few things that have such an easy and affordable treatment. I mean, it's one dose. Nothing else takes one dose and you're done. And $5. It's so simple and yet, why is it so rampant?"
