Clark County Committees Hear Update on Emergency Communications Project, Part 2

-The Clark County Law Enforcement/Emergency Management Committee and Finance Committee heard an update on the county’s multi-million dollar communication system upgrade project. The Clark County Board of Supervisors approved the $4.6 million dollar project back in 2014. The county is being assisted in the project by PSC Alliance who’s helping acquire tower sites, getting the equipment, working on the system and more. Some parts of the project that they’re still working on include getting 8 fixed sites for the equipment, installing new dispatch consoles, creating the countywide analog simulcast radio system that’s easy for people to use, and installing more vehicular repeaters in the Sheriff Department’s vehicles.
When it comes to the locations of the sites that would hold the equipment, they’ve looked at nine locations including Thorp, Owen, the Dorchester/Colby/Abbotsford area, Greenwood, Loyal, Granton and the Neillsville area. This has proven to be the most challenging aspect of the project as they look for equipment sites on towers that already exist and some areas where they’ll need to build their own. It gets complicated because some towers that were publicly owned have been sold to private companies, which complicates matters because they’ll charge anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000 a month to have the county put equipment on their towers. That’s why the county is looking to build its own towers in a couple spots, including Greenwood and maybe Granton, because it would be cheaper in the long run.
