New Ordinance for Neillsville Fishing Pond
Thursday, May 26th, 2016 -- 9:26 AM
-The Neillsville City Council approved having the city attorney write up an ordinance regarding the trout pond in Neillsville. The Neillsville Men’s Club provides fish for the pond in Neillsville as well as the pond in Granton. The club’s main purpose for stocking the pond with fish was for kids to come and enjoy fishing. However, many adults are observed fishing in the pond and taking their catch home with them even though there’s a sign at the pond that says it’s only for kids 14 and younger. This new ordinance would only allow kids to fish in the pond as that’s what the Men’s Club wanted it for.
There were some concerns regarding whether or not the ordinance could be considered discriminatory to people based on their age. But the city attorney stated that there are other “youth” activities like baseball or basketball where adults aren’t allowed to play so this would be no different. It was also stated that the pond is city property, so they have the authority to create this ordinance, which would be enforced by the Police Department. There will be penalties if it’s not followed.
