Black River Falls Fire Department Responds to Fire Caused by Lightning

-On May 3, around 7:30pm, the Jackson County Emergency Dispatch Center (EDC) paged the Black River Falls Fire Department and DNR Fire Control for a lighting strike which was reported to have started a wildland fire near a liquid propane tank.The location of the fire was N7404 County Road F located in the township of Adams and County of Jackson. At the time of this alarm the area had a thunderstorm taking place. Upon arrival the department found a tree near a 1,000 gallon LP had been struck by lightning. The strike ruptured an underground copper LP gas line going from the tank to the home at the address. The LP tank was turned off and the fire from the ruptured line went out. Further investigation found the nearby single family, single story, wood frame home to have smoke coming from the eves. The fire was located in the basement in the area where the cooper LP gas line came into the home and involved a basement wall, the first floor sub floor and floor joists.
The home has water and fire damage in the basement as well as smoke damage throughout. The home is insured and damage is estimated to be $30,000. The department was on scene with 13 firefighters for 2 hours and there were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.
