Plea/Sentencing of Neillsville Woman Charged with Mistreatment of Animals Pushed Back

Friday, April 29th, 2016 -- 10:24 AM

-The plea/sentencing hearing of a Neillsville woman charged with animal mistreatment was pushed back.

Back in August of 2015, authorities received a report of animals running at large on a farm near Neillsville. They discovered that the animals were without water in 90 degree heat and humidity. After obtaining a search warrant, authorities returned and discovered over 43 dogs living in deplorable conditions in the home. They also removed 6 horses who were underfed and in poor medical condition. Carolyn Christie has been charged with 26 counts in relation to this incident including intentionally mistreating animals.

Christie was scheduled for a plea/sentencing in Clark County Court Thursday morning. However, the defense and state had been unable to reach a deal due to a bond provision. As part of Christie’s bond, she was allowed to keep several horses, but under the condition that authorities could come out to her property and check on the animals at any time. Recently, when they went out to do that, the horses were gone. They had been moved to another farm in the county.

The investigator on the case has been preoccupied with another important case and was unable to contact the District Attorney in regards to the conditions of the horses. The Defense argued that this is relevant to sentencing because, if the horses are in good condition, she would like to keep them. In the end, a judge agreed to push the date to May 27th and amended Christie’s bond to state that any animal owned by Christie, regardless of where it’s located, can be checked by authorities.
