-The Neillsville City Council approved changing the city’s Tourism Committee to a Tourism Commission.During a Tourism Committee Meeting held on April 20th, City Attorney Bonnie Wachsmith discussed changes to state law regarding tourism funds. In the case of Neillsville, if the tourism entity stayed as a committee, the funds collected from the city’s room tax would be put under the control of another entity which could use those funds for other purposes, as long as it's related to tourism. By becoming a commission, the city will still have some control over the funds collected. However, they will need a facilitator to distribute the funds and report back to the state to make sure they’re being used for tourism. The city will have to choose the facilitator and one suggestion was the Neillsville Chamber of Commerce.
The council also approved the asphalt bid which was approved just prior to their meeting during the Public Works portion of the meeting. They received one bid from American Asphalt of Wisconsin at $71.89 per ton for the 1,200 tons Neillsville will need coming to a total of $86,268. A representative from American Asphalt said that the cost could go down because as of now they’ll be hauling the asphalt from Stevens Point because there’s no plant in the area. However, they are looking into building one, which may cause the cost to go down if that happens because they won’t be hauling the asphalt as far.
