-It was a deadly weekend on Clark County roads.Three people were killed in two separate traffic crashes on Saturday, April 2nd. In the first incident, two children died after the vehicle they were riding in left the roadway and struck a tree on Granton Road by Pray Avenue in the Township of Grant.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of the crash at about 5:47 pm. An initial investigation indicates a Chevy minivan was traveling east on Granton Road when the driver, Aurelia Perez-Amador, age 23, lost control on a patch of mixed snow, slush and ice. The van then entered the north ditch and tipped onto its passenger side. The top of the van then struck a large tree collapsing the passenger compartment. The operator of the van was flown by helicopter to the St. Joseph’s Hospital for her injuries but the other occupants, her two children, a 3 yr. old girl and a 5 yr. old girl were pronounced dead at the scene. Speed and road conditions appear to be factors in the accident. The driver was wearing her seatbelt and the two children were not restrained. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.
In the 2nd incident, a man died after the vehicle he was driving went through a stop sign and was struck on its passenger side on Hi Line Avenue by Pine St. in the Township of Mayville.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office received a report of the crash at about 6:50 pm. Initial investigation indicates a Geo Tracker was traveling west on Pine Street when the driver, 53-year-old Dean L. Swanson, failed to stop at the stop sign at Hi Line Avenue. The Geo Tracker entered the intersection and was hit on the passenger side by a Chevy Silverado truck, being driven by 44-year-old Shannon Underwood, which was traveling south. Shannon was unable to avoid the collision. Both vehicles came to rest on their sides in the west ditch.
Dean was pronounced dead at the scene by the Coroner’s Office. Shannon and 4 other occupants of the truck were transported to the St. Joseph’s Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
