Wisconsin Farmers Expected to Plant Abut 4 Million Acres of Corn in 2016

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin farmers are expected to plant about four million acres of corn for all purposes in 2016, which is about the same amount of land as they seeded last year.But the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service said in its Prospective Plantings report this week that growers intend to plant 1.95 million acres of soybeans in the Badger State, an increase of 70,000 acres more than in 2015. If realized, this will be Wisconsin's highest soybean planted acreage ever. Winter wheat planted acreage is estimated at 290,000 acres, a 60,000 acres boost compared to last year. Oat producers are looking to seed 220,000 acres, down 60,000 acres below 2015.
About 1.50 million acres of dry hay is expected to come off the fields this year, down 10,000 acres from the previous season. The annual Prospective Plantings is based on the voluntary responses from approximately 1,400 Wisconsin producers. Actual plantings will depend upon weather, economic conditions and the availability of production inputs at the time producers must make their final planting decisions.
