Obama Administration to Release Number of People Killed in Counter Terrorism Strikes

Tuesday, March 8th, 2016 -- 8:13 AM

(AP) -The Obama administration plans to disclose how many people have been killed by U.S. drones and counter terrorism strikes since President Barack Obama took office in 2009.

White House counter terrorism adviser Lisa Monaco says the U.S. will release its assessment "in the coming weeks" covering casualties of both combatants and civilians. The assessment won't cover areas deemed to have "active hostilities," like Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Outside of those major conflict areas, the U.S. in recent years has conducted counter terrorism strikes in Pakistan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia, among other places. Monaco says in a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations that the figured will be disclosed annually in the future. She's casting it as part of an effort to show transparency and maintain legitimacy for U.S. counter terrorism actions.
