State Assembly Passes Bill Requiring Schools to Report Crimes on their Property

Thursday, February 18th, 2016 -- 8:15 AM

(AP) -The state Assembly has passed a bill that would require schools to report crimes on their property.

The bill calls for public, voucher and charter high schools to report crime data on state report cards that track test scores and graduation rates. The schools would have to collect statistics on specific crimes and safety-related incidents reported to a principal, school security or police that occur on school property, buses or at an event.

The bill comes after the voucher program expanded statewide. Program advocates have used crime data to persuade public school students to transfer to voucher or charter schools, particularly in Milwaukee, arguing their schools are safer than public schools. The Assembly approved the bill on a voice vote Tuesday. It goes next to the state Senate.
