-40 more elk will be coming to Jackson County. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has captured 40 more Kentucky elk and they'll be transported to their new home sometime this year. This is the 2nd year that elk have been introduced into Jackson County. Last year, 23 elk were caught and released, but accidents and predator attacks have caused the number to decrease to 15.
The elk will be under quarantine and acclimation for at least 120 days before they are released in the area of the Black River State Forest. The department's goal is to have 150 elk in Jackson County. They also plan on adding more elk to the Clam Lake heard in northern Wisconsin. That herd currently sits at 155.
