-The Owen-Withee School Board had the first reading of several policies at their meeting on Monday of last week. The board did a first reading of revision to Policy 133 regarding filling board vacancies. The revision inserted language to allow the Board President to appoint a replacement for a board vacancy if the full board cannot fill the vacancy within 60 days. In Owen-Withee's case, with a 7 member board, if one member resigns, leaving 6 members, and they continually vote in 3-3 tie on candidates, the president my appoint a replacement who will be on the board until the next election.
The board did a first reading of revision to Policy 423 regarding Public School Open Enrollment. With changes to state law, the Board needed to update the district's Open Enrollment policies. The major changes to the policy now outline that each January the board will identify the number of regular ed and special ed students that will be accept to enroll in the district each year under Open Enrollment. The other major changes deal with the language that now forbids the denial of a special ed student's open enrollment application on the basis of financial burden to the district and it changed how the District will charge resident districts for special ed students who enter the District.
