School District of Greenwood Holds Meeting on Spring Referendum, Final

Monday, February 8th, 2016 -- 9:34 AM

-Around 40 people turned out for the School District of Greenwood's first meeting on their proposed referendum for the spring elections in April.

Like many school districts in Clark County and around the state, Greenwood is asking its voters to approve a referendum to maintain its current 4K-12 programs. Due to state imposed revenue limits and declining state aid, it has made it very difficult for school districts, including Greenwood, to keep up with rising costs of providing students with a quality education.

After the 20 minute presentation, the Q&A session was held. There were questions asked about the amount coming off once the building is paid for, around $583,000, where previous cuts have happened, salary and healthcare, and if the cut in student aid from the state went to voucher schools, which some of it has. There was also a question on whether new legislation making the rounds in Madison, in regards to when schools can go to referendum, and if that will affect Greenwood. It shouldn't because it has stalled a bit. It was also stated that the district has reached out to local legislators about Greenwood's situation and many schools in Clark County are operating a referendum. Finally, a question brought up, in regards to cuts and referendums, was how long we can continue to do this before other options need to be considered such as consolidation.

Greenwood will be holding another meeting on Tuesday, February 23rd at the Athletic Club in Willard starting at 6:30pm. There may be other meetings before the election as well. If you have any further questions about the referendum you can contact the Greenwood School District's Administration.
