School District of Greenwood Holds Meeting on Spring Referendum, Part 3

Saturday, February 6th, 2016 -- 1:16 PM

-Around 40 people turned out for the School District of Greenwood's first meeting on their proposed referendum for the spring elections in April.

Like many school districts in Clark County and around the state, Greenwood is asking its voters to approve a referendum to maintain its current 4K-12 programs. Due to state imposed revenue limits and declining state aid, it has made it very difficult for school districts, including Greenwood, to keep up with rising costs of providing students with a quality education.

In regards to the mill rate, should the referendum pass, the community will actually see a decrease in their rate. Because the debt on the building will be paid off this spring, this new referendum, that would be put on if it passes, is less than that amount. This causes the mil rate to drop from $13.07, which has been what Greenwood taxpayers have seen for some time, to $11.27 in the next school year. It will hold steady around that amount over the next four years of the referendum. Taxpayers in Greenwood would see close to a $180 decrease on a $100,000 home. If the referendum were to fail, the mil rate would drop all the way to $7.27, but the deficits I mentioned in a previous article would accumulate.

If the referendum doesn't pass, the Greenwood School District would face massive cuts in all areas. This could result in cuts to positions, academics, sports, electives, and co-curricular opportunities for the students. The district didn't have specifics on what would be cut at the meeting, but they would have to look at all options.

Greenwood will be holding another meeting on Tuesday, February 23rd at the Athletic Club in Willard starting at 6:30pm. There may be other meetings before the election as well. Coming up this weekend, we'll hear about more of the numbers regarding the Greenwood School District and the referendum. Coming up on Monday, we'll hear some of the questions Greenwood residents had during the meeting.
