-Today, February 5th, is a day to show your support for women's cardiovascular health by wearing the color red.Today is National Wear Red Day. Rebecca Rosandick, the Public Health Specialist/Health Educator with the Clark County Health Department, explained why this day is important.
"When looking at the statistics, heart disease is still the number one killer of American women. So, in 2013 alone, it was responsible for about 23% of the total deaths in women. So, that's about 1 in 3. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases, so, again, heart attack and stroke risks. Over 400,000 women have heart attacks annually, 83,000 of those are under ages 65. 35,000 are under 55. For women, the average age of a heart attack is about 70-years-old, so really, in the grand scheme of things, that's pretty young still, I'd say."
"Through education and awareness, the American Heart Association estimates that about 80% of heart disease and stroke events can be prevented. So, by wearing red, raising awareness, educating others, if people ask why you're wearing red, talk about the American Heart Association and the Go Red for Women campaign."
If you'd like to learn more you can visit the following websites.
