School District of Greenwood Holds Meeting on Spring Referendum, Part 2
Friday, February 5th, 2016 -- 9:26 AM
-Around 40 people turned out for the School District of Greenwood's first meeting on their proposed referendum for the spring elections in April.Like many school districts in Clark County and around the state, Greenwood is asking its voters to approve a referendum to maintain its current 4K-12 programs. Due to state imposed revenue limits and declining state aid, it has made it very difficult for school districts, including Greenwood, to keep up with rising costs of providing students with a quality education.
The Greenwood School District has already cut $1.7 million from its annual operating budget over the past 6 years. During the 2009-10 school year, the district's budget was $7.1 million with 389 students enrolled at Greenwood. For the year's budget, it was $5.4 million with 381 students. So, even though enrollment has remained steady, budgets have decreased. Previously, a $500,000 referendum was passed in 2010 to maintain educational programs, but that will end in the spring. This new referendum would replace that one in order to continue those quality programs. If the referendum isn't passed, the district will face a $635,000 deficit by the next school year. That will increase to $745,000 by 2017-18, $860,000 in 2018-19, $1 million by 2019-20 and $1.2 million by 2020-21.
Greenwood will be holding another meeting on Tuesday, February 23rd at the Athletic Club in Willard starting at 6:30pm. There may be other meetings before the election as well. Coming up this weekend, we'll hear about more of the numbers regarding the Greenwood School District and the referendum.
