-This Friday, February 5th, you can show your support for women's cardiovascular health by wearing the color red. This Friday is National Wear Red Day. Rebecca Rosandick, the Public Health Specialist/Health Educator with the Clark County Health Department, explained the warning signs of a heart attack and stroke.
"With a heart attack, some heart attacks are sudden and intense, but most are kinda slow and there will be a mild pain or discomfort. And, at first, a lot of times people aren't sure what exactly is wrong and they wait too long before getting help. But some common signs that may indicate a heart attack is chest discomfort or discomfort in other areas of the upper body, like the jaw, back, neck or arms, shortness of breath, light headedness and then sometimes even nausea or vomiting."
"For a stroke, the warning signs people can remember by using the acronym FAST, which stands for face, arm, speech and time. So, one of the warning signs is a sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body. There might be sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding. There might be sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes or may be trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance and coordination. And sometimes there's a sudden severe headache with no known cause. It's important to note, that if you're around someone with one or more of these warning signs, don't delay. Immediately call 911. If given within 3 hours of symptom onset, they can administer a clot busting drug that will reduce the likely hood of long term disabilities."
Coming up on Friday, Rebecca will talk about why National Wear Red is important.
