This Friday is National Wear Red Day, Part 1

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016 -- 10:40 AM

-This Friday, February 5th, you can show your support for women's cardiovascular health by wearing the color red.

This Friday is National Wear Red Day. Rebecca Rosandick, the Public Health Specialist/Health Educator with the Clark County Health Department, explained Wear Red Day in further detail.

"This Friday is National Wear Red Day. This event is part of the "Go Red for Women" Campaign, which is sponsored by the American Heart Association. The whole point of this event is to raise awareness for heart disease and stroke risks among women. So, by wearing red, you are raising awareness."

Rebecca also talked about things women can do to reduce the risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

"So, the main way, I would say, is probably to schedule your Well Women visit. And, in that, it's just a preventative check up and women can go to their doctor and it checks their overall health status. So, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, signs of heart disease, stroke or other illness."

"Other things that women can do to reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease, and by cardiovascular disease, I mean like heart attacks or strokes. They can not smoke or stop smoking. Smoking is awful for cardiovascular health. It raises triglyceride levels, lowers good cholesterol and promotes plaque build up in the arteries."

"Other things they can do is eat healthy for their heart by having a well balanced diet, they can aim for a healthy weight, they can get moving just by working out or increasing their physical activity. They can also know their numbers, which is, again, by having that Well Women check up, stopping by their doctor. And they can become educated and know the warning signs of a heart attack or a stroke."

Coming up on Thursday, Rebecca will explain the warning signs of a heart attack and a stroke.
