Cause of Death Determined for Victim of Jackson County Fire

-Smoke inhalation was determined to be the cause of death for a woman who died in a fire in Jackson County at the beginning of 2016.During the early morning hours of January 2nd, firefighters responded to a report of a fire at a home on Grand Street in Merillan. 94-year-old Irene Schattie was the owner of the home and the only one there when the fire occurred. An autopsy determined she died of smoke inhalation.
Investigators have been unable to determine what caused the fire because of the extensive damage, but they said it isn't considered suspicious.
