Time for Girl Scout Cookies, Final
Friday, January 22nd, 2016 -- 12:38 PM
-For many people, one of the best times of year is hear again.Girl Scouts will begin selling their cookies today. I spoke with Melissa Loest, Communications Coordinator with Girl Scouts, about the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Melissa talked where the profits from the sales go.
Melissa: "One of the big questions we get about the Girl Scout Cookie Program is does the money stay local? And yes, after we pay the banker, because, yes, we do have to pay for the delicious cookies, after we pay the banker, 100% of the money stays local. And it is divided between the troops, who can use the money to go to camp, they can go on all kinds of adventures. We had one troop who used it to go to Europe. They can use it to fund their fund. Also, a lot of troops use it for community service projects. And then some of the money comes back to our council to put on programming, to be able to recruit more members, to be able to reach out to girls who couldn't be involved in girl scouting due to economic or family reasons. But all of the money from this program stays right here, in our community serving the Girl Scouts here."
There are several ways people can order the Girl Scout Cookies.
Melissa: "If you do not know a girl and a girl doesn't come to your door, you can actually call the cookie hot line, which is 800-246-4171 or you can log on to girlscoutcookies.org. And what you do is you put in your address and your phone number and it actually comes to our council and we have a girl scout come to your door to sell you cookies in the community. And if you also see a girl scout at your local grocery store, be sure to buy a box from her. Make sure to ask her why she's selling cookies because these girls really know what their goal is and what their working toward. And they'll definitely tell you what camp they want to go to, what community service project they have planned. The girls are really proud of what they're accomplishing.
To end our interview, Melissa explained a contest happening this year.
Melissa: "We have an awesome contest going on this year; it is called 5-for-5. And the 5-for-5 contest is that if you buy 5 boxes of cookies in one transaction, and cookies are $4 per box, so that's $20, if buy 5 boxes, you can entered in to win 5 cases of Girl Scout Cookies!"
Once again, the cookie sales start today and run through April 3rd.
