Farm Succession and Estate Planning Workshop, Part 4

Tuesday, January 19th, 2016 -- 1:14 PM

-The Clark County UW-Extension, along with Lincoln, Marathon and Taylor County UW-Extension and AbbyBank, is bringing a Farm Succession and Estate Planning Workshop to the Abbotsford City Hall on February, 4th.

I spoke with Nancy Vance, Family Living Agent, Richard Halopka, Crops and Soil Agent, and Melissa Kono, CNRED Agent, about the workshop. Melissa explained that they wanted this program to be a way to build health family relationships as well.

Melissa: "The reason that Nancy and I got involved, particularly Nancy's programming, is that one of the goals of Extension is to build healthy families and have strong relationships. And a lot of this really boils down to communication and building healthy family relationships and talking through things and working through conflict in a productive way."

"Farming can come with its own family challenges and Extension has curriculum that's developed to help families work through that, so that's how we became involved. Our approach is actually different than what they do in other counties. In other counties, it's mostly the Ag Agents that talk. Richard's idea was to bring Nancy and myself in to do a more cross program approach to it, so bringing in Nancy's programming. Nancy's done a lot of work both here and prior to coming to Extension on family relationships and things like that. And then I have a counseling/finance background, so bringing some of those things in just to give it a little deeper approach then it might otherwise have."

Coming up on Wednesday, we'll hear about some of the guest speakers that will be at the event.
