Time for Girl Scout Cookies, Part 1
Tuesday, January 19th, 2016 -- 11:12 AM
-For many people, one of the best times of year is here again.Girl Scouts will begin selling their cookies this Friday. I spoke with Melissa Loest, Communications Coordinator with Girl Scouts, about the Girl Scout Cookie Program. Melissa explained that there's more to the program than selling cookies.
Melissa: "A big part of the Girl Scout Cookie Program, the part we want all girls to take away from it, is that this program provides life skills that they can use not just today, not just tomorrow, but all the way through their lives. We call them the 5 skills and they are goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics."
"Our program is available for 3 months of the year. We always get the question of why isn't the cookie sale all year? And that's because the Girl Scout Cookie Program is part of the Girl Scout leadership experience. Throughout the years, girls earn badges and complete journeys and do community service projects and then they participate in this program. Yes, this program helps them fund their fund by allowing them to sell Girl Scout Cookies, but the program itself teaches them these wonderful skills. Things like people skills you will use forever. Money management, at a little age little kindergartners are learning how to make change and how much it takes to go to Wisconsin Dells for the summer. This program is truly a learning experience from top to bottom."
Coming up on Tuesday, Melissa will talk about a new method of selling cookies that was implemented last year.
