Clark County Man Sentenced for Repeated Sexual Assault of a Child

Monday, January 18th, 2016 -- 12:20 PM

-A Clark County man was sentenced on Friday for sexually assaulting a young girl.

In September of 2014, an 8-year-old girl came forward and said the man, from Chili, sexually assaulted her 40 to 50 times within the past year and a half. The man did admit to investigators that he touched the girl, but he said that she asked him to do it. The man was found guilty, due to a no contest plea, of repeated sexual assault of child in Clark County Court back in May of last year.

During his sentencing on Tuesday, the Clark County District Attorney called this case "textbook grooming" as the man got to know the victim and her family from church and other activities. She also called him a "wolf in sheep's clothing." The D.A. went on to say that the man claimed the victim wanted him to touch her and that she had a crush on him. In the end, the D.A. asked for 8 years in prison with 8 years extended supervision.

The defense asked the judge to go with the PSI. He stated that a lengthy jail sentence isn't the answer for him. The defense stated that he should receive treatment, can be rehabilitated and can be a member of society, albeit supervised closely. The defendant stated that he was sorry, he didn't want to put another kid at risk and he wants the treatment.

In the end, the judge sentenced the man to 15 years' probation with 1 year of jail as a condition of probation. He's not allowed to have any contact with the victim or her family. He must also go through sex offender counseling and registry, he must pay all courts costs and restitution including the child's counseling bills and he can't have any contact with anyone under 18. Also, the judge said that he cannot minimize his situation and must admit to everyone what he's done and why he's in jail as he's had a tendency to minimize the extent of his abuse.
