-A Spencer man who used a smoke screen to flee from authorities was sentenced for the incident in Wood County Court on Friday. On October 10th, around 2:30am, a sheriff's deputy tried to stop a pickup truck for failing to stop at a stop sign. The pickup accelerated away and a modified exhaust began to spew thick, black smoke forcing the deputy to back off. Eventually, the deputy lost the truck. An anonymous tip led authorities to 20-year-old Bailey Schiefelbein who admitted that he can control the amount of smoke emitted from his exhaust and he used it to escape the deputy.
He pleaded guilty to 3 misdemeanor charges of resisting/failing to stop/fleeing, resisting or obstructing an officer and disorderly conduct. He also pleaded guilty to several traffic violations. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail, 2 years' probation and over $1,300 in fines. He must also return the exhaust on his vehicle back to normal.
