Don't Forget the Clark County Area Food Pantry and Resource Center with your Holiday Donations, Part 4

Tuesday, December 15th, 2015 -- 1:15 PM

-With the holiday season upon us, donations to the Clark County Area Food Pantry and Resource Center are very important.

I spoke with Judy Morrow and Deanna Heiman, who were instrumental in getting the Food Pantry going, about the importance of donating and the challenges of running a facility like this. They talked about the importance of donating this time of year and all year.

Judy: "Well, first of all, I think we need to thank the Angel Tree Project because we don't want to duplicate services and I don't know who many people get these generous food boxes, but I think it's well over 300 families. So, our food pantry itself is not set up at this point to be giving out food boxes at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but we also don't want to duplicate services."

"So, it's just very important to have that food all year round at this point. Make sure that we can full fill the needs of those that are needing it. Obviously, the giving spirit is a little bit higher during the holidays, so we have plenty of storage room, just bring on your food!"

Deanna: "And I think that's a funny thing that people may not realize is there are two times of year that are really tough for food pantries. Summer is one of them. One of the reasons summer is tough is because families have their kids out of school. So, you're providing more meals out of the home. The kids aren't getting the breakfast and lunch at school, so you have to provide more meals or families have to provide more meals at home. And, generally, during the summer, people are out-and-about vacationing and they kind of forget food pantries. They're not reminded as much to be giving to the food pantries on a consistent basis during that time of year."

"The second thing is with the holidays. We run into the same thing, the kids are home. You have more kids, your kids are in the house. Families have to worry about feeding their children because they're not getting breakfast and lunch at school. So, that need increases greatly during the holidays. Or you have people visiting and how do you feed these people that are visiting? So, they are the increase in food needs and that's something that really puts a strain on our resources."

Coming up on Wednesday, we'll hear about the importance of keeping in touch with the Food Pantry so people know what's needed.
