Wage Increases/Freezes Approved at Clark County Board of Supervisors Meeting

Tuesday, December 15th, 2015 -- 8:15 AM

-Employee compensation and the employee handbook were the main focus of Wednesday night's Clark County Board of Supervisors meeting.

The final items approved during that meeting involved employee compensation. The first was to freeze any step increases for 2016 and the second was to provide wage increases for most county employees. The unions came to the board towards the end of the year, after the budgeting process was complete, and requested to negotiate wages. The board agreed and approved a .73% increase in wages for county employees.

However, that amount hadn't been budgeted initially, so to help make up the cost, that was part of the reasoning behind the 2016 step increase freeze. The freeze affects any county employee that would have received a wage increase in 2016. They will not receive now until 2017. The total savings is expected to be $137,262.57. This freeze was not without controversy, as many county board members questioned how the county can attract new employees and keep quality employees by not allowing them to have their increase. Others felt that the wage increase, although small, would help make up for that.
