Don't Forget the Clark County Area Food Pantry and Resource Center with your Holiday Donations, Part 1

Thursday, December 10th, 2015 -- 11:29 AM

-With the holiday season upon us, donations to the Clark County Area Food Pantry and Resource Center are very important.

I spoke with Judy Morrow and Deanna Heiman, who were instrumental in getting the Food Pantry going, about the importance of donating and the challenges of running a facility like this. First, they explained the history of how the CCAFPRC came to be.

Deanna: "When I was serving as the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, I would have people that would come in to my office looking for services or salvation army vouchers, something like that. So, I started communicating with Judy, trying to line up these resources for people and help them in any way that I could. And Judy shared a story with me about how the local food pantry had closed and there were so many people in need."

"So, she and I decided to take on a project of finding a location for a new food pantry and getting one started. So, we looked at a number of locations and we were pretty much at wits end. A building owner renting to a food pantry, some of them are hesitant to do that. So, it was a challenge."

"And then our City Clerk, Rex Rohel, gave us a recommendation and told us to look at the property at 140 West 5th Street, which is on the corner of 5th and West Streets in town. We thought the property would be just perfect. It has handicap accessibility in the back. We started working with the owners and they were fantastic! They loved the idea of renting to a food pantry and we were very excited to finally have a home."

Coming up on Friday, we'll hear more about the formation of CCAFPRC.
