House Leaders Announce Tightening Rules For Non-US citizens to Travel to the U.S.

Saturday, December 5th, 2015 -- 10:09 AM

The Associated Press reports, House leaders have announced bipartisan legislation to tighten rules for a program that allows citizens from 38 countries to travel to the U.S. without a visa.

The aim is to make the U.S. less potentially vulnerable in the wake of the Paris attacks. Republicans are promising a vote next week, and Democrats have signed on as well. The proposal may end up added to the big spending measure that's the main piece of remaining business in Congress this year.

The bill would require U.S. visitors from the 38 "visa waiver" countries to go through stricter screening procedures and obtain a visa if they've recently been in in Iraq, Iran, Syria or Sudan. The legislation would bolster intelligence-sharing requirements and mandate new fraud-resistant passports with chips containing biometric information.**
