November is National Adoption Month, Part 2

Wednesday, November 18th, 2015 -- 10:17 AM

-The Holidays are upon us and it can be a difficult time for childless couples trying to adopt a baby to make their family complete.

November is National Adoption Month and there have been many changes to the adoption process in recent years. I spoke with Cassie Ronning, a Catholic Charities Adoption Social Worker, and Wisconsin native Katie, who's trying to adopt a baby with her husband. Cassie explained what they look for in couples trying to adopt.

"We're looking for a number of things. One of the major criteria is that parents need to be married for two years and they also need to be able to meet state foster care licensing code. Some of those codes including passing local and FBI background checks and then being financially, emotionally and physically stable in order to provide for a child in their home."

Katie then told me her story.

"My husband and I went through many years of fertility treatments that were unsuccessful. And we got to a point where we decide that our path to having a child was meant to be through adoption. So, at that point, we did a lot of research and determined that we wanted to do domestic infant adoption and that's the program that Catholic Charities have. So, we did some more research on Catholic Charities and we heard a lot of great things about them and their adoption program, so we pursued them as our adoption agency."

Coming up on Thursday, Katie will talk about how the adoption process has been for her and her husband.
