November is National Adoption Month, Part 1

Tuesday, November 17th, 2015 -- 11:23 AM

-The Holidays are upon us and it can be a difficult time for childless couples trying to adopt a baby to make their family complete.

November is National Adoption Month and there have been many changes to the adoption process in recent years. I spoke with Cassie Ronning, a Catholic Charities Adoption Social Worker, and Wisconsin native Katie, who's trying to adopt a baby with her husband. Cassie explained how the adoption process has changed.

"The adoption process has dramatically changed over the past couple years. Even just a few years back, birth parents didn't have any say or any right in picking which family was to parent their child forever. And then they didn't have any relationship with the child once the adoption was finalized. As of recently, we at Catholic Charities have been advocating for open adoption. And what the open adoption is is when the birth parents, mom and dad, get to choose which family they want to parent their child. And then which type of involvement and how much involvement they want with that child and the adoptive family once adoption is finalized. So, they can either have picture or letters sent in the mail, they can have phone calls throughout the year or they can even have face-to-face meetings with that child and that family throughout the course of their life."

Coming up on Wednesday, Cassie will talk about what they look for in couple trying to adopt and we'll hear Katie's story as well.
