Higher Bill for City of Marshfield Due to Delay in Water Tower Construction

(Marshfield News Herald) -When Marshfield Utilities puts its new water tower in service next week at Depot Street and Willow Avenue, it will come after a year's delay over how it was to be built.According to the Marshfield News Herald, that delay added about $100,000 to the tower cost, which now exceeds $2 million. The 165-feet-tall tower is within the three-mile fly-over zone of the Municipal Airport and the city's Zoning Board of Appeals refused to grant a variance to allow a 225-foot-tall crane at the construction site, said Dave Wasserburger, MU's water superintendent.
Despite getting approval from the City Council's Airport Committee and Federal Aviation Administration, the ZBOA effectively blocked the project, he said, as their decision required an appeal to Wood County Circuit Court.
Finding another site in the city wasn't possible because all of the city is within the airport's three-mile flyover zone. Instead, MU hired an attorney for about $1,100 to review the city ordinance the ZBOA used in its decision. The attorney interpreted the ordinance to only apply to permanent structures.
