17-Year-Old Makes Initial Appearance for Wood County Shooting

(AP and Marshfield News Herald) -A 17-year-old boy arrested in the fatal shooting of the mother of a girl he had been dating appeared in Wood County Court on Monday.Authorities have said Miguel Oertel fatally shot 47-year-old Theresa Coates at her home in Saratoga on Aug. 17, and shot himself in the head. Search warrants said her 17-year-old daughter told police that she ended her relationship with him on the day of the shooting. Oertel was released from the hospital Sept. 16th and was booked into the Wood County Jail in Wisconsin Rapids.
During his initial appearance, a $500,000 cash bond was set and he'll be back in court on October 13th for a preliminary hearing and arraignment. Oertel is charged with first-degree reckless homicide and if he's found guilty and sentenced to the maximum amount, he could spend 60 years in prison.
