Neillsville School District's Active Shooter Procedures, Final
Friday, October 2nd, 2015 -- 11:29 AM
-A new school year started just a few weeks ago and many students returned to elementary, high schools and colleges. And, unfortunately, within those few short weeks around the state and nation, there have already been reports of threats at schools, lockdowns and even shootings.Because of this, I spoke with Neillsville District Administrator John Gaier and Neillsville Police Chief Scott Klueckmann about the procedures in place at the Neillsville School District. Chief Klueckmann and Mr. Gaier ended our interview by talking about building connections and getting involved being the key to preventing an incident like this.
Mr. Gaier said, "Parents build those connections with your kids. School staff build those connections with kids. That's going to be real important. Community members care about your other community members. Know what's going on and if there's someone that you believe needs help, offer a way of helping if you see somebody struggling for some reason. Because as I read through the people that commit these types of crimes, it's usually a link to mental illness or it's usually a link to their feeling of hopelessness. And if we can identify those people and try and get them help then we can possibly avoid a lot of this."
Chief Klueckmann said, "Prevention, obviously, is the key because by the time we get involved, they're already in the school and reeking havoc, so we're just reacting at that point and then it's almost too late. So, definitely identifying them upfront would be the best way to do it."
Again, the purpose of these stories the past week were not to scare anyone, but inform you of the procedures in place at the Neillsville School District.
