Neillsville School District's Active Shooter Procedures, Part 4

Thursday, October 1st, 2015 -- 11:47 AM

-A new school year started just a few weeks ago and many students returned to elementary, high schools and colleges. And, unfortunately, within those few short weeks around the state and nation, there have already been reports of threats at schools, lockdowns and even shootings.

Because of this, I spoke with Neillsville District Administrator John Gaier and Neillsville Police Chief Scott Klueckmann about the procedures in place at the Neillsville School District. Chief Klueckmann and Mr. Gaier shared their thoughts on why school shootings seem more common today compared to years ago.

Chief Klueckmann said, "I think mental health is a big part of it. It's hard to get into someone's mind what turns maybe a suicidal subject into a homicidal subject. Why they want a large body count before they kill themselves. Because that's often times they way these things go. They'll kill as many people as possible and then kill themselves. I can't decipher that thinking. But mental health, I think, is a big part of that."

Mr. Gaier said, "I agree. If you looked at, certainly, kid's needs over the past 20 years, there is a growing mental health issue. There's a lot of theories out there about why that may be. I think social media and 24 hour media may have something to do with that. Kids are deluged on a daily basis with information and certainly much more information than I ever had as kid or had to try and deal with as a kid. Plus, the pressures of society to look a certain way and those type of things, I think that's all going to create mental health issues for kids. That is very much, I think, the case. I think also that the last two generations of people have grown a bit more cynical with the political division and societal division and people seem to be going more to the extremes of things. I think that has created kids that are a bit more cynical or the last to generations of young people that are a bit more cynical and the research shows that."

Coming up on Friday, Chief Klueckmann and Mr. Gaier will talk about building connections and getting involved the key to the prevention of an incident like this.
