Neillsville School District's Active Shooter Procedures, Part 1
Monday, September 28th, 2015 -- 11:34 AM
-A new school year started just a few weeks ago and many students returned to elementary, high schools and colleges. And, unfortunately, within those few short weeks around the state and nation, there have already been reports of threats at schools, lockdowns and even shootings.Because of this, I spoke with Neillsville District Administrator John Gaier and Neillsville Police Chief Scott Klueckmann about the procedures in place at the Neillsville School District. Mr. Gaier explained the district's procedures should this ever occur.
Mr. Gaier said, "Number one, we only have very few doors open and they are doors that are open right next to the offices where people can see traffic coming in. We also have our safety lock down procedures. So, we can go over our PA system, we can order lock down and teachers are trained in how to go through that lock down procedure. So, we have those things in place. We have a camera system in place. We've worked with local law enforcement so that we have numbers now on our doors, number on our windows so they know exactly, if we call them, where, at least, we believe an intruder will be."
Mr. Gaier also stated that the district staff does practice those procedures from time to time. And please note that the purpose of these stories over the next week is not to scare anyone, but to inform you that there are procedures in place at the district and it's important to know what those are.
Coming up on Tuesday, we'll hear from Neillsville Police Chief Scott Klueckmann about the Neillsville Police Department's role in an active shooter situation.
