Lawmakers Offer Amendment To Bill

The sponsors of a bill that would ban the sale, transfer, or use of tissue from aborted fetuses are offering an amendment to the proposal.Wisconsin Radio Network reports that the amendment would allow research using tissue from fetuses aborted prior to January first of this year to continue. It comes in response to concerns raised by U-W officials, who argued the ban could halt life-saving work that's being done in the state that relies of fetal stem cell lines developed decades ago.
The sponsors of the bill said in a statement that the original proposal was never expected to end work using existing stem cell lines. The legislation was introduced after a series of undercover videos claimed to show Planned Parenthood officials discussing the sale of aborted fetal tissue. The health care provider has denied that's the case.
None of Planned Parenthood's clinics in the state currently collect fetal tissue for researchers.
