School Buses Will Become A Common Site

Monday, August 31st, 2015 -- 10:10 AM

With another school year getting underway, school buses will become an increasingly common sight along Wisconsin roadways.

When students climb aboard a school bus, they're getting onto one of the safest vehicles on the road today. That has a lot to do with how buses are engineered and built to be large and visible, along with the careful drivers behind the wheel.

The Wisconsin State Patrol does its part by inspecting every school bus in the state once a year. Inspectors examine bus brakes, steering, tires, electrical systems and safety equipment. In a typical year, the State Patrol conducts about 11,000 school bus inspections including annual reviews, spot checks and pre-sale examinations.

Public safety officials are reminding motorists to be on the lookout for children boarding or exiting school buses. Figures from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation show there were nearly 800 citations given to drivers last year for failing to stop for a school bus.
