Neillsville Police Department Part of "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," Part 2

Tuesday, August 25th, 2015 -- 1:14 PM

-In an effort to save lives and prevent injuries, the Neillsville Police Department will join law enforcement agencies from all over Wisconsin in the annual "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign going on now until September 7th.

The goal is not to arrest more drunken drivers, but to deter drunken driving so we can reach zero preventable traffic deaths. Last year, there were 162 fatalities in alcohol-related crashes. Neillsville Police Chief Scott Klueckmann talked more about the campaign itself.

Chief Klueckmann said, "The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration which is on the federal level. And they sponsor these campaigns in an effort to mobilize hundreds of law enforcement agencies throughout the state to increase enforcement and compliance with motor safety laws. High visibility law enforcement as well as media coverage highlight a particular issue which helps motorist buckle up, slow down and drive sober."

Chief Klueckmann said that the department has participated in programs like this before.

"We've been involved in a similar campaign such as this through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation in the past," he said. "We won a traffic safety grant several years ago, and I don't remember the exact year, but we used the money to purchase a dash cam for our squad car to help with our enforcement effort."

The Drive Sober Campaign runs now through September 7th.
