Thorp Superintendent Disciplined for a Relationship with a Subordinate

Thursday, August 20th, 2015 -- 9:58 AM

(Jonathan Anderson, News Herald Media) -The superintendent of the Thorp School District has been disciplined after an investigation found he had a sexual relationship with a subordinate and failed to resolve problems involving her, according to documents released on Tuesday.

News Herald Media reports, The School Board launched the probe in June after receiving a complaint that a personal relationship between Superintendent James Montgomery and Theresa Rosemeyer, an administrative assistant, had affected operations of the school district and its central office. Office staff said that the relationship negatively impacted office relations meaning that their work got done, but not as quickly as it should have.

The report by an outside investigator went on to say that the superintendent did not handle the situation as well as he should have in regards to the employee because of the relationship. After a hearing in July, the board suspended Montgomery for three days without pay and ordered to take corrective action, including being cautious about personal relationships with district staff, adopting effective management practices and participating in a plan of improvement. He will be subject to quarterly evaluations in October, January, April and July.

In addition, the board could adopt an anti-nepotism policy, which the investigator also recommended. Rosemeyer has resigned from her position and Montgomery had intended to as well, but later withdrew his resignation after being asked by school members and the public to stay.
