Last Week's Field Conditions Not as Ideal as the Previous Week for Wisconsin Farmers

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -After experiencing ideal weather conditions earlier in the month, Wisconsin farmers had to face heavy rain, snow and high winds while finishing up their fieldwork last week.

The state's weekly crop/progress summary noted that daytime highs swung from the 70s down to the 30s while lows fell into the teens on some nights. Rain and snowmelt raised grain moistures and softened fields. And producers in some areas say they may need to wait for muddy fields to freeze before getting to the last of their corn.  Topsoil moisture levels were rated one percent very short, 12 percent short, 74 percent adequate and 13 percent surplus.  As of Sunday, about 87 percent of the corn for grain was combined.  That was over a month ahead of last year and 16 days better than the five-year average.

The moisture content was reported at 18 percent.  Nearly all of the soybeans have been taken off the fields, which was also several weeks further along than normal.  All but seven percent of the winter wheat was emerged, with the crop rated 82 percent good to excellent statewide.  And the fall tillage progress has reached the two-thirds mark, four weeks ahead of 2019 and 10 days ahead of average for mid-November.
