Former Leader of Wisconsin DNR Says the Agency's New Plan Won't Fix the Problems

Thursday, July 30th, 2015 -- 8:15 AM

(AP) -A former leader of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the agency's new reorganization plan won't fix its problems.

On Tuesday, the agency launched a reorganization to divide protection for water quality between two divisions and leave other environmental protection programs in a "business support" division. George Meyer is the agency's former secretary and now directs the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation. He tells the Wisconsin State Journal that the agency needs more workers to solve its problems.

Staffing at the agency has been reduced by 15 percent since the 2000-2001 budget. Over that same period, the need for environmental regulation in Wisconsin has increased due to an explosion of factory farms and industrial sand mining. Gov. Scott Walker has said he wants to further reduce the agency's staff.
