June Milk Production Report

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) - Wisconsin farmers have shipped more milk during 'June Dairy Month' than they did the same time a year ago, making it the most productive June on record.According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, the Dairy State produced 2.40 billion pounds of milk last month, up 3.4 percent from June 2014, but lower than May's 2.49 billion pounds, which had more days on the calendar). This marks the 14th consecutive month that total output has exceeded previous year figures in Wisconsin. Nationally, 16.4 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was up 0.7 percent higher than in 2014, but less than the previous month's 17.2 billion.
Meanwhile, the number of milk cows in the major dairy states totaled 8.63 million head, 56,000 head more than June 2014, but 2,000 head fewer than May 2015. The number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.27 million head. Production per cow averaged 1,880 pounds, up 50 pounds from a year ago.
