Senator Ron Johnson Talks about Hot Button Issues, Part 5 Final Thoughts

Friday, July 24th, 2015 -- 12:38 PM

-Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson was in the Central Wisconsin area on Saturday.

Senator Johnson sat down with me and talked about some hot button issues on the federal level. Senator Johnson talked about the country's financial future.

"I think in general, as we're moving forward as a country. As we move forward into the 2016 election, we can't afford to have another election just based on political platitudes. Like hope and change or I'm for the middle class."

"We're at a point in time in this country where we have enormous financial challenges that aren't too far done the road. I mean, we're already having enormous financial challenges, but they get much worse. We had a hearing in my committee two weeks ago and laid out the deficit over the next 30 years. That's really the definition of a 30 year demographic problem, all of us baby boomer generation retiring at rate of 10,000 people per day."

"On a bipartisan basis, people made all these problems and we have no way to pay for it. I'm glad you're sitting down. Here's CBO's latest estimate, their ultimate fiscal scenario which is probable the more realistic one. The deficit over the next 30 years will be $103 trillion. Our debt right now is $18 trillion so that will drive our debt up to $121 trillion. Completely unsustainable, but nobody is really addressing it."

"So, my approach, to my re-election, is I'm going to do my job as Chairman of this committee. It's an important responsibility. It gives me a real good opportunity to lay out these realities. Things like the 30 year deficit, things like the insecurity of our border, the fact that we're really not addressing cyber security, the fact that our electrical grid is at risk. So, I'm going to lay out those realities, I'm going to do my job and I'm going to tell the truth. And, hopefully, that's a winning strategy."

Senator Johnson does face former Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold in the 2016 election.
