Senator Ron Johnson Talks about Hot Button Issues, Part 3 Border Security
Wednesday, July 22nd, 2015 -- 12:45 PM
-Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson was in the Central Wisconsin area on Saturday.Senator Johnson sat down with me and talked about some hot button issues on the federal level. He provided his thoughts on tighter security at the country's borders.
"Certainly the border security aspect is really right under the jurisdiction of my committee. And so we have just completed this week our 8th in a series of hearings on border security. We'll be issuing a report on the different components of border security. It will be a very detailed report, summarized in terms of these are our primary findings, here are some recommendations."
"Probably the best statistic to show you how completely unsecured our border really is, and in spite of what you hear from the Department of Homeland Security and this Administration, and even prior Administrations, on the southwest boarder, on the southwest border we are only stopping about 5% of illegal drugs."
"And if you want to know the root cause of an unsecured border, it starts with America's insatiable demand for drugs, which is given rise to the creation of drug cartels that are beginning to consolidate with transnational criminal organizations, Islamic terror groups like Hezbola. Those cartels have destroyed the public institutions in place like Central America and Mexico. There's the root cause, but then as you fast forward, those drug cartels are a business. So, they start expanding. So, they go, 'well, we're already smuggling drugs, hey, how about we start smuggling humans. Start doing sex trafficking. And we'll start using people coming into this country illegally, we'll start charging them a fee and use them as a diversionary tactic for our drugs.' So, this is an unbelievably dangerous witches brew of problems here."
"And it's not going to be solved by demagoguery. And, honestly, we're not going to be able to achieve a comprehensive solution for this. It's just not politically feasible. I voted against the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill because it was a bad bill. It wouldn't solve the problem. It would have thrown like $260 billion in more welfare benefits at the problem. That's called incentives for illegal immigration. What I'm trying to get this Administration to do is acknowledge the fact that a comprehensive solution is certainly not going to occur in your administration."
Coming up on Thursday, Senator Johnson will talk about the Affordable Care Act.
