Presentation Starts Owen-Withee School Board Meeting

Thursday, July 16th, 2015 -- 11:57 AM

-A presentation started the Owen-Withee School Board meeting on Monday.

District Administrator Bob Houts and teacher Travis Engel presented to the board the idea of using the school forest located in the Town of Hoard as a maple syrup producing area.

The area has been reviewed by a forester and is prime for producing maple sap. The first phase of the project would be to harvest the forest for "sugar" to maximize the maple sap production. If approved, this could take place in the winter of 2015-16. The next phase would be to install pipeline and vacuum pumps in the summer of 2016. Maple syrup harvesting would begin in the spring of 2017.

The project has been estimate to cost about $35,000. Revenue from the logging is estimated to be $15,000 with revenue from the sap to be about $13,500 annually. By the second year of production the project could be a revenue generator for the district.
