Wisconsin Emergency Management and County Emergency Management Host Shelter in Place Meeting

Monday, July 13th, 2015 -- 11:09 AM

-Wisconsin Emergency Management along with Clark, Jackson and Monroe County Emergency Management hosted a meeting on Shelter in Place on Friday.

A Shelter in Place alert is usually issued if there's a hazardous chemical spill or a smoke plume from a large fire. When a Shelter in Place alert is issued, you should go into an airtight building and close all the windows, doors and any other system that intakes air. If you have pets, you should take them inside with you.

If you're in a vehicle, you should try and get to the nearest air tight shelter, but if you can't, close the windows, close the vents and turn off the heating/air conditioning and try to get to a shelter or drive outside the affected area. Anyone in the affected area should stay indoors and wait for further instructions.

A Shelter in Place order is usually short, just a few hours, and there are protective action items people can do to better prepare for the order and other emergency situations that may arise.
