(AP) -A Wisconsin man is charged with threatening to kill President Barack Obama.Fifty-five-year-old Brian Dutcher of Tomah appeared in federal court Tuesday after being charged last week.
The U.S. Attorney's office says Dutcher traveled to La Crosse on Wednesday, where Obama was scheduled to make a speech the next day. According to an affidavit, Dutcher approached a security guard at the La Crosse library and said he would "take (Obama) out" if he got the chance. The affidavit says Dutcher repeated his statements to U.S. Secret Service agents.
U.S. Attorney John Vaudreuil told the Wisconsin State Journal last week authorities sought a civil commitment and Dutcher was being held in the mental health facility. A detention hearing is set Thursday. Dutcher's federal public defender, Joe Bugni, declined comment Tuesday.
