Lawmakers Return to Washington Tuesday with a Long To-Do List

Monday, July 6th, 2015 -- 11:24 AM

(AP) -Lawmakers return to Washington on Tuesday with a long to-do list for summer and a government funding deadline coming this fall.

Republicans are eager to avoid another Capitol Hill mess as they struggle to hang onto control of Congress and try to take back the White House next year. The government funding deadline arrives Sept. 30.

Lawmakers face more immediate tests before them. Near the top of the list is renewing highway funding by July 31, before it runs out in the middle of summer driving season.

The highway bill probably will be the way for an attempt to renew the Export-Import Bank, which just expired due to congressional inaction. The bank makes and underwrites loans to help foreign companies buy U.S. products.
